Cultural Signal vs Demand
Direct answer
A cultural signal is evidence of observability—attention, talk, or shared framing. It is not, by itself, evidence of demand.
Before treating visibility as demand, ask what the signal actually shows, then check whether you have separable relational, behavioral, and commercial evidence—plus competing explanations and an explicit claim boundary.
This page does not replace Detect Cultural Change Early, which owns how much commitment current evidence has earned. This page owns which evidence types support or fail the claim that visibility is becoming demand. It is not a proprietary demand score and not proof that meeting these checks forms a market.
Decision implication
Before you brief creative, media, assortment, or partnership because a cultural topic is loud, write the demand claim as a falsifiable statement and list which evidence classes you actually hold—versus which you are mistaking for talk.
What evidence can establish (refusal table)
| Observation | May support | Does not establish alone |
|---|---|---|
| Search / social visibility | Attention / observability | Demand |
| Stated intention | Expressed preference | Spending |
| One discourse corpus | Conversation structure | Independent behavior + commerce |
| Product launches / assortment | Supply response | Consumer demand |
| Missing SKU evidence | No observed SKU evidence | Non-demand (absence is not proof without an adjacent-commerce exam) |
| Cross-category association | Adjacency / co-movement | Propagation sequence |
These rows are claim discipline—not a universal law that every demand read must traverse every row in order.
Demand-evidence classes
Inspect independently (checklist, not sequence):
- Relational — multi-node coherence across meanings/communities/categories, or isolated visibility?
- Behavioral — purchase, substitution, participation, avoidance, routines—or conversation alone?
- Commercial — assortment, spend, partnership, pricing response—or supply theater?
Then name competing explanations (platform spike, promo artifact, creator seeding, measurement artifact) and the current claim boundary (what remains unproven if you act now). For how much organizational commitment that packet has earned, use Detect Cultural Change Early.
Refusal walkthrough + compressed examples
Walkthrough — beauty “dupe” talk: Observation = high comparison discourse. May support = conversation structure / expressed preference for value. Does not establish alone = independent substitution series or spend. Competing explanations remain live. Claim boundary: stronger demand claim not yet earned under the current packet—not a finding that dupe “is not demand.”
GLP-1 (scoped pharmacological catalyst illustration): Visibility alone would not support a demand claim. A stronger demand-relevant read required independent behavioral/commercial consequence plus explicit refused claims (no propagation sequence; intention ≠ traced spending). That pattern must not transfer as a general cultural-demand law.
